This is my first thriller, and I love it. I have already read it six times. Just have patience, and you will get addicted.
The plot is incredible, keeping me hooked from start to finish. I was never bored, with an eerie cult, thrilling moments, and mysteries unraveling that blew my mind. The ending was also satisfying.

Just wow! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was a bit confused about the characters at the start, but as I continued reading, everything fell into place. The unexpected twist took me by surprise. I am eager to delve into the second book in the series, 'The Family Remains'.
An abandoned mansion, a cult, wicked characters, and an engaging narrative style make this book a captivating read. Lisa Jewell skillfully navigates through timelines, revealing just enough to maintain our curiosity and drive us to continue reading. Just when you believe you have solved the mysteries, unexpected twists unravel a new layer of enigmas.
What a captivating read! 'The Family Upstairs' marked my introduction to Lisa Jewell's work. Despite my initial apprehension about meeting the high expectations set on Goodreads, I am now a devoted fan of Jewell's writing. I am amazed at how skillfully the author drew me into the storyline. Why did I not discover her books earlier?
This book is a must-read. It keeps you glued until the last page, making it a real page-turner. I've already chosen another book by this author.
This book delves into the dark secrets of a family in a very nicely written manner.
Picture yourself as a wealthy individual with a glamorous spouse and two lovely kids, immersed in a life of extravagance filled with parties, alcohol, and exclusive school amenities. However, gradually, you begin to lose all that holds significance for you - your assets, investments, and business, essentially losing grip on your own life. Forced to withdraw your children from school to make ends meet, you must take drastic measures to regain control and survive. Yet, in this vulnerable state, another family exploits your situation by moving into your mansion, your sole remaining possession. They gradually seize authority over your home, possessions, family, leaving you in a state of utter powerlessness, fostering your submission. However, this narrative does not revolve around you; it centers on the children ensnared in this turmoil. It portrays their harrowing ordeal, living as captives in their own residence, enduring physical and mental abuse, deprived of basic necessities like food, shoes, and freedom. Moreover, it unfolds the chilling account of three deceased individuals and an infant.
Told from the perspectives of three different characters, this psychological thriller of a book is enough to keep you awake at night, engrossed in the plotlines. While it starts off slowly, it quickly gains momentum and becomes a gripping page-turner. With elements of a cult, a sociopath, obsessive relationships, and family drama, the story is constantly engaging. The character of Henry towards the end raises questions - he is unreliable, somewhat erratic, but is there goodness in him? This ambiguity kept me intrigued. Overall, a very captivating albeit dark and twisted read.
