The story begins with Shinmen Takezō, a fierce and impulsive survivor of the Battle of Sekigahara. Feared by his village and driven by an obsession with becoming invincible, Takezō eventually takes the name Miyamoto Musashi and begins a transformative journey across Japan. His encounters with formidable swordsmen, spiritual teachers, rivals and companions gradually challenge everything he believes about power. What starts as a pursuit of victory develops into a profound search for discipline, purpose and the true meaning of strength.

Takehiko Inoue combines meticulously detailed artwork with intense duels, quiet moments of reflection and deeply human character development. Rather than treating Musashi only as a legendary warrior, Vagabond explores ambition, isolation, friendship, loss, violence and self-mastery.
