The second edition of Essentials of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics is a collection of updated concepts and information about the therapeutic agents used in veterinary medicine. It contains extensively revised and updated chapters to include recently used drugs, published information and therapeutic practices. It provides broad coverage from the basic properties of drugs to their safe usage in animals. The molecular actions of drug are explained in simple manner. Due emphasis is given on the indications, contraindications and dosage of drugs in different species of animals. The volume is broad in scope, reflecting the myriad considerations that constitute current pharmacological rationale. The text is divided into 13 sections consisting of 78 chapters with many diagrammatic illustrations and tables. For easy comprehension of the subject, each chapter is written in simple language with relevant background information on principles that govern body systems. The present edition has been prepared specifically to suit the specific needs of undergraduate and graduate veterinary students, teachers and practicing veterinarians. Dr. Harpal Singh Sandhu is presently working as Dean, College of Veterinary Science. Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, India. He was born on 28th November, 1959 at Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), India. He did B.V. Sc. & A.H. (1983), M.V. Sc. (1985) and Ph.D. (1994) from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. His field of specialization is Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology. He joined as Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in year 1986 and subsequently promoted to Associate Professor (1995) and then Professor (2003) in the same University. He has over 26 years of experience of teaching and research, including 4 years and 3 months as Head of Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology. He has guided 15 M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. students. He has been honoured with several National Awards including Alarsin Award in 1998, Dr. M.R. Murkibhavi Award in 2000, STOX Gold Medal twice in 2001 and 2009 and Academy of Sciences for Animal Welfare Award in 2010. He is elected Fellow of Society of Toxicology, India and Academy of Sciences for Animal welfare. Dr. Sandhu has more than 170 publications to his credit. He has authored 5 books and 5 laboratory manuals. He is member of several professional societies and is holding key positions in some of these. He remained president (2006 and 2007) and vice-president (2003, 2004 and 2005) of Society of Toxicology (STOX), India. He was Managing Editor of Toxicology International for period 2008-2010 and is presently a member of advisory board of Toxicology International.
